HIV Clinical Research in Nigeria: Promising Results...Prof. Ezeibe

Professor Maduike C. O.Ezeibe et. al. at the Department of Veterinary Medicine, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Nigeria, have published promising results on the use of an investigational drug produced with Aluminum Silicate and Magnesium Silicate (Synthetic Aluminum-Magnesium Silicate) to treat HIV infection to reduce its viral load in infected individuals.

Professor Ezeibe also presented results from his “informal” study on few HIV-positive patients in the December 2015 5th World Congress on Virology in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. However, once announced in Nigeria in 2017, the government moved swiftly to discredit Professor Ezeibe for not conducting proper clinical trials with required approval.

The Nigerian government, however, has not offered any financial support to Professor Ezeibe and his team of scientists to enable set up required formal clinical trials to ensure compliance with country and international good clinical practice regulations. According to statistics from the Nigerian government,over 3 million people are living with HIV in Nigeria, and viable, safe and effective alternative cheaper treatment options are needed.
Nevertheless, it is well known that the Nigerian government both present and prior administrations, have not prioritized scientific and medical research.
