In the Report, “IGP says Nigerian Police not involved in right violation, torture of suspects”, Vanguard Nigeria notes that “Inspector General of Police, IGP, Idris Ibrahim has reacted to a statement credited to Amnesty International that men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, use extreme torture to obtain bribe from arrested suspects.
“Our research has uncovered a pattern of ruthless human rights violations where victims are arrested and tortured until they either make a ‘confession’ or pay officers a bribe to be released,” Amnesty International had said.
The IGP, however, in an interview with Al-Jazeera on Thursday, says the Nigeria Police has never been involved in torture.”
The IGP’s assertion is a blatant untruth considering overwhelming documented evidence of human rights violations by Nigerian Police which include: unlawful arrests, abuse and brutality, extrajudicial killings and other heinous crimes, as well as deep seated bribery and corruption and other criminal activities.
Clearly, a government in deliberate denial under former dictator and current President, Rtd, General Muhammadu Buhari, cannot initiate and implement any positive reform of the Nigerian Police.
